Atari and Plaion today revealed a new console created from their partnership: The Atari 7800+ console, a modernized recreation of the 1986 7800 console. The updated console has HDMI connectivity and comes with a Wireless CX78+ Gamepad, and is also compatible with Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. According to Atari, the 7800+ is now available for pre-order with a planned launch date in winter 2024.
In addition to the aforementioned CX78+ controller, Atari and Plaion have also announced the CX40+ Wireless Joystick. The former is a recreation of the 7800’s original controller, while the latter is a recreation of the CX40 joystick. Both connect to the 7800+ and 2600+ wirelessly and are compatible with original 7800 and 2600 hardware via an included adapter. They’re also both PC-compatible.
In addition to the controller, each console ships with a copy of Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, a homebrew sequel to the classic title Crystal Castles, on a specially designed cartridge. Ten new games cartridges launch alongside the new console, which include classic Atari titles such as Asteroids Deluxe, Berzerk and Frenzy (all programmed by Atari homebrew developer Robert DeCrescenzo). In addition, Atari announced several 2600+ game collection cartridges, including the Epyx Game Collection and the RealSports Collection.
Wade Rosen, Atari CEO, said in a statement, “Expanding the Atari+ platform with new games, new wireless controllers, and the 7800+ console is a perfect follow-up to last year’s successful launch of the Atari 2600+.”
