How U.S. Tariffs Stand to Impact Prescription Drugs


When President Donald Trump announced plans for reciprocal tariffs on April 2, analysts quickly noted that pharmaceuticals were exempted. But the reprieve is unlikely to last because the president has repeatedly said he wants to impose tariffs on prescription drugs as well. His stated goals have varied: creating manufacturing jobs in the United States, limiting the offshoring of profits, and addressing national security concerns about having critical drugs made abroad. With typical boldness, the president predicted that the higher the tariffs, the faster the biopharmaceutical companies will relocate their facilities to the United States.
