Although Noah Cyrus was inspired by her family while writing her upcoming album, there are certain “misconceptions” she wants to clear up about her creative process.
“Whether it was some of the hardest times or some of the best times, I truly have the best people to write about,” Noah, 25, told mom Tish Cyrus on the Thursday, April 25, episode of the matriarch’s “Sorry We’re Cyrus” podcast. “I think a misconception of this album will be that I am addressing certain people or certain problems. I’m really not.”
According to Noah, the record is written “from the perspective of a child.”
“This isn’t playing into any headline you’ve read over the past 10 years,” she explained. “This is the experience of you, this is the experience of my neighbor, this is the experience of everyone in this room … [and] this is the experience as a daughter. Like, life just happens and s*** just happens and it doesn’t tear your family apart.”
She added, “Just because there is hurt and pain, [and] there is not one of you watching this that has not felt hurt and pain from anyone [or] any of the people in your life. It’s my one place where I get to go and release that. It’s not any big thing now. I’m coming from a place of universal feelings.”
Noah dropped her first single from the album, “Don’t Put It All on Me,” in March, which was cowritten by brother Braison Cyrus.
“I have always been the observer in our family, and Braison wrote about how I tend to carry the weight of that on my shoulder,” she said in a statement last month. “We all want to connect with our past while also being aware of the present moment. Music does that for me, and this new collection of songs was made with that in mind. I want to evoke that feeling of a comforting friend that a song can be — and allow us all to heal.”

Noah is the youngest child of Tish, 57, and ex-husband Billy Ray Cyrus. The exes were married from 1993 to 2022 and also share Brandi, 37, Trace, 36, Miley, 32, and Braison, 30. (Brandi and Trace are Tish’s children from a previous marriage, whom Billy Ray, 63, adopted when he married the music manager. He also shares son Christopher, 33, with ex Kristin Luckey.)
After Billy Ray and Tish divorced, she moved on with Dominic Purcell, which allegedly sparked a rift with Noah. Us Weekly broke the news in March 2024 that Noah and Purcell, now 55, had been “seeing” one another for eight months when Tish started pursuing him. None of them have publicly addressed the alleged love triangle, but Noah did skip the pair’s wedding in August 2023. The mother-daughter duo started repairing their relationship by May 2024, with a source telling Us that Noah has “definitely moved on and she’s over it.”
A year later, Trace claimed that many of his siblings were estranged from Billy Ray. In a lengthy Instagram note shared in January, Trace alleged that the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer wasn’t healthy after his inaugural ball performance sparked speculation about his well-being.
“Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years, but you’ve pushed all of us away,” Trace, in part, wrote. “Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better. Somehow, just like me, she still idolizes you, though. We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns.”
While both Billy Ray and Braison denied the claims, Noah never addressed being name-dropped in her sibling’s letter. She has, however, recently started to get to know Billy Ray’s new girlfriend, actress Elizabeth Hurley. (Billy Ray and Hurley, 59, confirmed their romance via Instagram on Easter Sunday.)
“Noah is still very close with her dad and has the strongest relationship with him out of the Cyrus kids,” a second insider told Us earlier in April, noting Hurley has “been in touch” with her.
Both Billy Ray and Tish have also separately championed Noah’s latest musical achievements.
“This album is so good and everybody knows ‘Don’t Put It All on Me’ is my all-time favorite song that you’ve ever done,” Tish gushed on Thursday’s podcast episode. “And not just because Braison wrote it, [but] it really is truly just one of the greatest songs. … I’m so obsessed with this record. It really is, like, truly a masterpiece and if she doesn’t get a Grammy, I may go off because she freaking deserves it.”
