Historic Scottish castle once home to Queen Margaret Tudor is selling for £1m

Methven Castle was once the home of Margaret Tudor, Queen of Scotland and wife to King James IV.

Gifted to her in 1503 as part of her marriage settlement, the estate remained her residence until her death at the castle in 1541.

Although the original structure dates back even earlier, the current form of Methven Castle was built in 1664.

Since then, the Daily Mail UK reported it has only passed through 11 families and has undergone several restorations that blend its medieval charm with modern living.

Set across four floors, the six-bedroom residence includes a separate cottage, turret house, a former icehouse, a summerhouse, a wine cellar, and even a hidden escape tunnel — a rare feature that adds to its allure.

The home sits on approximately 1.1 acres of private grounds.

The ground floor houses a library, office, hall, boot room and utility space, while the first floor features the main living area, kitchen, dining room, drawing room, a double bedroom and a bathroom.

The second floor offers a grand hall and two more double bedrooms, while the top floor holds a gallery and another two double rooms.

Despite its modern updates, much of the castle’s traditional character has been preserved, with features like a stone staircase, coat of arms, and historical portraits giving a strong sense of the property’s past.

The adjacent one-bedroom cottage offers further living space with a kitchen, dining area, and lounge — perfect for guests or staff.

The property is being marketed by Rettie, who describe it as “an A-Listed and sympathetically restored former royal castle, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Scotland’s Late Medieval history.”

Margaret Tudor, who was married to James IV at the age of 13, was Queen of Scotland from 1503 to 1513. The pair had six children, and following James’s death at the Battle of Flodden, Margaret remained a key political figure in Scotland.

She died at Methven Castle in October 1541.
